BAKKHALI, RAICHAK, GADIARA, |
CONNECTIONS: | |
| The citizens of
Calcutta love to travel and the nearby getaways offer quick and cheap alternatives. These
places are not very great spots and their development has not been easy because of
geographical reasons. But they offer interesting alternatives to the more popular
destinations. Bakkhali:
Bakkhali is a small beach resort about 132 kms from Calcutta. Despite being isolated and having limited accommodation, it is very popular with the citizens of Calcutta. One can walk to the Frasergunj beach from Bakkhali. Diamond Harbor: It is a popular picnic spot for Calcutta's because of its proximity to the city. There are ruins of a Portuguese fort here. The Diamond Harbor Road which connects the town to Calcutta has several resorts on the highway. GADIARA: GADIARA is located at the confluence of the Highly and Rupnarayan rivers. It is opposite to Diamond Harbor. GADIARA is connected by bus from Calcutta and Howrah. One can also take a bus to Noorpur from Calcutta and cross over by ferry. From Howrah one can take the suburban train to Bagnan and then take a bus to GADIARA. There is a WBTDC tourist bungalow in GADIARA. |
RAICHAK
RAICHAK has gained in stature with the opening of the Radisson Fort (it is spelt like that) hotel.
The area known as Shyamolima - the riverside retreat has been developed into a small township with exclusive bungalows. RAICHAK is 50 kms from Calcutta. SAGARDWIP:
This island is one of the greatest Hindu pilgrimage centers in India. Every year on Maker Sankranti (Mid January), the spot near the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal comes alive with the Gangasagar Mela (fair). Thousands of pilgrims from all corners of the country congregate here for a holy dip. The island also has the Kapil Muni temple. However the island may be visited any other time if one wants to avoid the huge crowds at the Gangasagar Mela. |
