The Vijay ToranBarddhaman / Burdwan is the district headquarters of Burdwan. It is a large district of more than 6 million people in the State of West Bengal,India.It is believed  to have been named after the Jain Tirthankara Mahavir Vardhamaan. It is situated near the Banka river and is 95 kms from Calcutta.

The Burdwan Science Centre It's well connected by road and rail to the rest of the country. The Maharajahs of Burdwan played a major role in the development of the city. The University of Burdwan is housed in the former Maharajah's palace. The town also has a  medical college. 

Do visit Purbasthali, a favorite destination of migratory birds during the winter months. December to March are the ideal months for birdwatching with excellent field trips and tours arranged by the Tourism department of Burdwan at reasonable rates.
Birdwatchers' pleasure is Darters, Pintails, Pochards and Plovers, to name a few.

The abandoned temple of Gopal at Amadpur, in Memari - built in 1572, it is a brick temple of straight-edged pyramidal shapes, some 3 miles from Memari railway station

Temple of Siva at Baidyapur in Kalna - this brick temple of pancharatna type, lying 8 miles to the west of Kalna town was built in the 19th Century

The ruins of an early medieval monument excavated in 1964, probably of a temple of the panchayatna type, made of laterite

 

Other spots of interest include:

Maithon - 16 miles from Asansol - the huge Dam with hillocks on either side. Motorable road negotiates thin forest area. An ideal beauty spot far from the maddening crowd.

Chittaranjan - 26 miles from Asansol - a self-contained railway colony with railway engine manufacturing factory in the vicinity. The factory has started manufacturing the latest railway engine with advanced technology.

Kalyaneswari - The place in Barakar is named after the Goddess Kalyaneswari, attracting thousands of pilgrims and visitors to its temple. The rocky area surrounded by the forest quiet is an additional attraction.

Golapbag - In common parlance, it means Garden of Roses. Originally belonging to the Maharaja of Bardhaman, it is now a University Campus. A beautiful site with trees and plants and tank, keeping the entire area calm, cool and quiet.

By Road:From Calcutta by bus,three hours journey directly to Burdwan.
