| Nabadwip (Navadwip): Nabadwip is a small town on the banks of the Hooghly river. The city has several temples and is an important religious center in West Bengal. One of the main attractions is the Sonar Gouranga temple. Nabadwip is famous as the birth place of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
In the late twelfth century, during the reign of Lakshmansena of the Sena dynasty, Nabadwip became the capital of Bengal. In the 1201/1202, Nabadwip was captured by Mohammed Bakhtiyar Khilji. This victory paved the way for Muslim rule in Bengal. Nabadwip continued to be an important cultural, religious and educational center of Bengal till the sixteenth century. Today it is a major religious center attracting devotees from all parts of the nation and the world. |
Mayapur:
It is often claimed that Mayapur is the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Mayapur is the world headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness more popularly known as the ISKCON.
